THE DRAGS, 6/24/01

A Note from Jimmy Richoux

To all who worked so hard to put this event together I offer my thanks, we had a great time and the thrill of being able to run my car on the track with my son was a memorable event. I would think that this is the type of event that should be scheduled on an annual basis because it was great. Having all of the clubs there at one time speaks volumes of the leadership of the clubs and is is preview of what can be doe through co-operation. Again my personal thanks to all who worked on this event for giving us such a wonderful opportunity.

Story by Laddie Roussel

I'm not sure we're suppose to have this much fun.... But, this was really a
terrific weekend.  A very successful cruise night on Saturday night & than
on Sunday morning, Sal, Norma, Karen & I headed out in our caravan to State
Capital Raceway from the north shore at 8:00 am. We arrived about 9:25 and
only two people beat us there. Les Tassin (pres BRCC) & Scotty Quebodeaux
(pres BSCC) were there setting up his BBQ grill.  We unloaded cars & than
setup the GNOCC & CCCC tents. Than gradually everyone started driving in...

The track was having some problems with the timing lights, So, we didn't get
to start racing until 10:45 or so... This really gave us some time to meet &
greet many of the folks from the other clubs.   Everyone was very patient &
Jimmy Talbot & I started numbering all the cars around 10:30. And, than the
fun began....

We had 75 cars.  60 cars raced & 50 of those were Vettes & the other 10 were
assorted other cars & trucks.  We had 125 people with picnic lunches & one
fantastic time...  We had many runs with passengers. It was a blast.... And,
this was the first time on drag strip for many.  I think everybody got as
many test & tune runs down the track as they wanted. Since this was a
private event, sponsored by the five South Louisiana Corvette Clubs (BRCC,
BSCC, CCC, CCCC & GNOCC), the track didn't enforce the long pants & helmet
rule...

At 1:15 the bracket racing began. And, around 40 cars participated in the
challenge.  After a couple of rounds we were down to the "Final Eight" and
all of these were C4s ....  Roger (pres GNOCC) was in this group.  Than it
was down to four & than there were two.... The trophy run was between Steve
Jones & Buddy Cook both members of the GNOCC. Well it was quite a race very
close & Steve Jones was the winner taking the 1st Place trophy & Buddy
taking the 2nd place trophy. I think the time was 14.4.

The weather was comfortable for a Louisiana summer. But, the tents really
came in handy... It seems like our members & cars would like another one of
these to be held during the cooler months.  We also got to see Felix (pres
CCCC) & Steve (pres CCC) in dresses washing each other's vette. All in fun &
they were good sports.

Again, this was a super fun day.... I want to thank all who came out & the
five clubs for sponsoring the event.  Here's a few more pics... laddie...
